Improve your email job applications
Online hiring and applying are the dominant techniques that both businesses and applicants are using these days. This is why learning what to do and what to avoid when applying by email is essential.
A report published recently by the latest Elance’s European Online Employment Report, shows that since July 2011 there has been a 55% increase in the hiring of web freelancers by UK businesses.
With more than one million young Brits being unemployed these days, impersonal email applications make it even more complicated for employers to get to know applicants properly. Sending the right email is the only chance graduates have to stand out from the rest.
Here are some tips worth following when applying for a graduate job by email:
• Write a pertinent subject line. Otherwise your email can be easily confused, lost or even worse, trashed without even be opened.
• Ensure that there are not grammatical and spelling mistakes in your text. Such errors will make employers cross you automatically from their list without even looking at your CV.
• Read the advert carefully and respond to all its key requirements. That’s what they are looking for, so give them the information they want.
• Respect them and follow their instructions. Don’t call if they ask not to and behave accordingly; don’t try to be too funny or too clever.
• Don’t attach covering letters; include it to the main body of the email. Too many attachments are more likely to be ignored.
• Make it an easy read. Write clear and in single-sentence paragraphs. They have lots of reading to do, so get to the point and don’t waste their time.
• Make sure that your CV is short and contains relevant details.
Graduates attitude towards any email application has to match the employer’s needs and expectations. The easier you make it for them to see what your profile is, the more chances for you to be selected.
