Bioresources Strategy Intern
Job Description
On behalf of our client’s Bioresources team, we are looking for an enthusiastic and hands-on placement student with a keen interest in engineering, risk mitigation, environmental net gain, energy, carbon impact & reduction.
Summary of responsibilities:
The day-to-day tasks will vary between office work (support with development of long-term strategy, data gathering and analysis, support with business cases assessment) and field work (familiarisation with various processes, data sampling & analysis, site meeting with project managers, suppliers, and stakeholders).
Background on Bioresources team:
The Bioresources team within the wider Wastewater Asset Strategy & Planning team at Southern Water (SWS) is responsible for overseeing the £100m+ tactical investment programme for SWS’ Bioresources estate (e.g. within the industry’s 5 year regulatory funding cycle). The team is also leading the development of long-term strategies, in line with the overarching company’s corporate strategic objectives.
From assessing and mitigating short-term risks (poor assets performance, permits non-compliance, impact of new regulations, inefficient cost-to-treat, Health & Safety) to developing the process flow sheets of tomorrow’s Bioresources operation to address longer-term threats, the team also gets involved with much wider aspects of SWS’ operation including energy efficiency & generation, carbon reduction, water and air quality improvement, soil health etc.
Person Requirements
* Undergraduates looking to take a year out in industry as part of their degree course
* Should be working towards a degree in environmental, engineering, geography, data-related fields or other associated studies
* Willing and able to travel to SWS’ operational sites, attend conferences and project meetings
* Clean driving license & vehicle
* Proficient with Office pack
* Basic knowledge of statistical analysis
* Experience of presenting technical content to wide audience
Desirable:
* Technical knowledge of Processes & technologies used in Water/Wastewater/Energy sectors
* Knowledge of Process modelling
* Bioresources regulatory framework
* Environmental permitting in relation to Bioresources
* Risk management
* Member of an appropriate Engineering/Scientific Institution
